Punjab on a $200 a day upgrade

What quadrupling the budget to $200 actually buys you — heritage hotels, private drivers, and dinner at the state's 3 best kitchens.

The upgrade math

Hotel: $110 gets you Taj Swarna Amritsar or the ITC Welcomhotel in Bathinda, both with pools and proper spas. In Kapurthala, the Kanjli Kothi heritage property runs $90 and is more atmospheric than either. Private car with driver: $45 for 8 hours including fuel, booked through the hotel or Savaari.

Meals: $25 for lunch at Punjab Grill or Swagath in Chandigarh, $30 for dinner at Punjabi By Nature or a tasting menu at a Taj restaurant. That is $210 all-in, and you have not tipped yet — budget $15 more for staff.

What it actually feels like

Skip the Wagah border scrum with a private BSF-liaised viewing seat ($20 upgrade). Do a private tour of the Golden Temple with a Sikh scholar-guide ($40 for 3 hours) — the difference in what you understand is enormous. Add a cooking class at a Kapurthala haveli ($55) or a vintage-car tour of Patiala's palaces ($75).

The $200 tier is where Punjab starts to feel like a considered luxury destination rather than a backpacker stop. Two nights at this level plus five at $50 gives you a full week under $700 excluding flights — genuinely excellent value versus Rajasthan.

Questions, answered

Is the Taj Swarna worth it?
Yes if you want a full resort day. It is 15 minutes from the Golden Temple, so you trade walking access for a real pool and gym. The breakfast buffet alone justifies half the room rate.
Can I do this without pre-booking?
Cars and drivers, yes, arranged same-day. Heritage properties like Kanjli Kothi have 6 rooms and book out 2 weeks ahead in winter.
