Hotels in Pathankot

Pathankot exists as a junction. It's where trains from Delhi and Amritsar transfer passengers to buses heading up to Dharamshala (90km), Dalhousie (85km), and Jammu (110km). The Army cantonment covers a big chunk of town, and the vibe is more transit hub than destination. That said, the Ranjit Sagar Dam 24km out is genuinely impressive — India's largest earth-fill dam, with a reservoir stretching into Himachal.

The Nurpur Fort and Mukteshwar Temple on the Himachal border are half-day trips people forget about. In town, the Shahpur Kandi Fort ruins by the Ravi river are atmospheric at sunset. Skip the town center — the market around the railway station is dense but has nothing you can’t get elsewhere. Come for one night before heading up to the hills, or as an army-family visit.

Where to stay in Pathankot

Stay near the railway station or on Dhangu Road — mid-range hotels $30-55, close to the buses for onward travel. The area around Mamun cantonment has quieter guesthouses at $25-40 but you’ll need transport for everything. Avoid the very cheap $10-15 lodges near the truck stands — safe enough, but grimy. If you’re catching a 5am bus to Dharamshala, stay within 500m of the ISBT.

Pathankot has two railway stations — Pathankot Junction (broad gauge, main line) and Pathankot Cantt. Direct trains from Delhi (7-9 hours, $12-25), Amritsar (2.5 hours, $4-8), Jammu (1.5 hours). The nearest airport is Amritsar (110km) or Jammu (100km). The ISBT bus stand runs frequent HRTC and PRTC buses to Dharamshala ($3-5), Dalhousie ($3-4), and Jammu ($3-5). Inside town, autos $1-2 for anywhere.
