Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh sits within the parkarma of the Golden Temple complex itself and marks the spot where one of Sikhism's most extraordinary martyrs completed his final journey. In November 1757, the 75-year-old scholar-warrior Baba Deep Singh — head of the Damdami Taksal — vowed to die defending the Harmandir Sahib from Afghan desecration. Mortally wounded 16 km away at Chabhal, he is said to have supported his own head with his left hand and fought on with an 18 kg khanda in his right until he reached the temple precinct, where he laid his head down and died.
The gurdwara is one of the most visited sub-shrines within the Golden Temple complex and takes only 20-30 minutes to see — but it's essential context for anyone trying to understand Sikh martyrdom. The main sanctum preserves the 18 kg khanda he wielded (weapon darshan on request through the granthi). It sits just inside the parkarma next to the Bunga Ramgarhia, and most pilgrims stop here before or after their Harmandir Sahib darshan.
