Prices in the workshops themselves are a fraction of what you pay in Delhi's Cottage Industries emporiums — a full inlay chessboard runs $30-80 here versus $200+ retail.
Beyond the craft, Hoshiarpur is a small Doaba city that happens to sit at the base of the Shivaliks. The Kamahi Devi temple on a hilltop 8km out is a family pilgrimage spot; the Takhni-Rehmapur wildlife sanctuary is a low-key day trip for birdwatchers (November-March best). The town itself is dense, functional, and has good street food around the Ghanta Ghar clock tower — not a destination on its own, but a real place to spend a night.

Stay near the clock tower or on Jalandhar Road — small hotels $25-45, decent for a night. There are no international chains. The area near the bus stand has cheaper $15-25 options with basic rooms; fine if you’re catching an early bus. Avoid the outer bypass hotels — you’ll need a rickshaw for every meal. For inlay-workshop visits, being able to walk to Sarai Sahri gate area is the main criterion.

Start at Ghanta Ghar (clock tower), walk east into the old lanes toward Sarai Sahri gate, pausing at three or four inlay workshops (most welcome brief visits), continue to Kamla Nehru park for the museum, and end at the main bazaar for lassi and jalebi at any of the corner shops.

Hoshiarpur railway station has passenger trains to Jalandhar (1 hour, $1) and Amritsar (3 hours, $3), but most travelers arrive by bus. PRTC buses from Jalandhar ISBT every 20 minutes ($1.50, 1.5 hours). Inside town, cycle-rickshaws ($0.50) and autos ($1-2) — no Ola coverage worth relying on.
