Day trip to Jalandhar from Punjab

Punjab's third-largest city, 80 km southeast of Amritsar, is the sports-goods capital of India and a busy stop between Amritsar and Chandigarh.

Getting there

Jalandhar sits on the main Delhi-Amritsar railway. The 12030 Shatabdi from Amritsar reaches Jalandhar City in 65 minutes, $6. From Chandigarh, take NH1 for 2.5 hours by car. Jalandhar has two stations — Jalandhar City for tourism, Jalandhar Cantt for connections. Auto-rickshaws from either station to downtown cost $1-2.

What to do

Devi Talab Mandir, a Hindu temple with a sacred tank and a mini-replica of Amritsar's Golden Temple, is the main tourist stop. Rangla Punjab Haveli on GT Road is a themed cultural park with folk performances and Punjabi food, $6 entry. The real draw is the Sports Market on Football Chowk — cricket bats, hockey sticks, and boxing gloves made locally, often at a third of the price of retail brands. Kashmiri Bazaar sells shawls and dry fruits.

Eating in Jalandhar

Haveli restaurant on the Amritsar-Jalandhar highway is Punjab's most famous themed dhaba, packed at lunchtime — full meal $8. In town, Kake Da Hotel does a legendary chicken curry and Lovely Sweets on Model Town Road for jalebi and samosas. Skip the mall-food chains; Jalandhar's strength is casual roadside dining.
