Fatehgarh Sahib is a place people come to weep. In December 1705, the Mughal governor of Sirhind ordered the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh — aged 7 and 9 — to be bricked alive after they refused to convert. The gurudwara marking the spot is the Bhora Sahib within the larger Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib complex, and the December Shaheedi Jor Mela (martyrs' fair) draws lakhs of pilgrims for three days of remembrance.
The town itself is small — Sirhind (2km south) is the older settlement with Mughal-era ruins including the Aam Khas Bagh, a decaying but atmospheric Mughal garden and imperial way-station. Rauza Sharif, the tomb of Sufi saint Mujaddid Alif Sani, is a genuinely important Islamic pilgrimage site. Skip the outer town. Come for one intense half-day or, better, the Shaheedi Jor Mela week in late December.
Very limited hotel options — a handful of basic $20-35 guesthouses in Sirhind and near the gurudwara. Most visitors day-trip from Chandigarh (60km, 1.5 hours) or Patiala (30km, 45 minutes). Gurudwara dharamshalas offer basic rooms at $5-10 during non-festival times but book directly at the gurudwara office. During Shaheedi Jor Mela (late December) everything fills — plan a Patiala or Chandigarh base and drive in.
Start at Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib main gate, walk south to Gurudwara Jyoti Sarup Sahib (cremation site of the two Sahibzadas), continue to Rauza Sharif Sufi shrine, then via the old Sirhind road to the Aam Khas Bagh ruins. Takes 2-3 hours including stops; morning is coolest.
All walking routesNo airport — Chandigarh IXC 60km northeast (1.5 hours by taxi, $30-40). Sirhind Junction railway station is on the Delhi-Amritsar main line — Shatabdi and other trains stop, though not the Vande Bharat. From Sirhind station it's a 5-minute auto ($1) to the gurudwara. PRTC buses from Chandigarh, Patiala, and Ludhiana every 30-60 minutes ($1.50-3).
