Chandigarh is technically a Union Territory but functions as Punjab's cosmopolitan escape. Le Corbusier's grid of numbered sectors, wide tree-lined avenues, and Brutalist concrete government buildings still works 65 years on. Sector 17 is the pedestrianized plaza where every Chandigarh teenager has taken a photo since 1968. The Capitol Complex — Secretariat, Assembly, High Court, and the Open Hand monument — is a UNESCO site and needs a free permit from the tourist office (Sector 17) or an escorted tour.
The Rock Garden by Nek Chand is 40 acres of found-object sculpture and one of the most visited attractions in India — arrive at opening (9am) to beat the crowds. Sukhna Lake at the base of the Shivaliks is where locals boat, jog, and eat corn on the cob at sunset. Skip the private commercial museums in Sector 10 — the Government Museum & Art Gallery in the same sector has real Gandhara sculpture for $0.50.
Sector 17 and Sector 22 are the central picks — walkable to shopping, food, and the ISBT bus terminal. Mid-range business hotels $60-100; the Taj and Lalit at $150+ are the splurges. Sector 35 and Sector 8 are quieter residential-adjacent areas with boutique stays $50-80. Avoid the industrial-area hotels (cheap at $25-40, but you’ll need a taxi for everything). For an early flight, use Mohali Aerocity instead — 20 minutes closer to the airport.
Start at Sector 17 plaza, walk east through Sector 8's quieter residential blocks, cross into Sector 3 past the golf course, then via the Capitol Complex outer boundary to Sukhna Lake for a sunset boat or a walk along the dam wall. Uber back for $2.
All walking routesChandigarh International Airport (IXC) is 12km south in Mohali — prepaid taxi $8-12, 25 minutes. Chandigarh Junction is well-connected: Vande Bharat and Shatabdi trains from Delhi (3-3.5 hours, $15-25). Inside the city, Ola and Uber are the best option — sectors are big and walking between them takes 20+ minutes. Cycling works well; several rental spots in Sector 17. The CTU bus system exists but tourists rarely use it.
