Anandpur Sahib is where the Khalsa was born on Baisakhi 1699. Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, the gurudwara marking the spot, is one of the five most sacred sites in Sikhism. The town sits in the Shivalik foothills — the setting alone, with hills rising behind the white domes, gives it a very different feel from the flat plains around Amritsar or Patiala.
Come during Hola Mohalla (March, day after Holi) and the town swells to hundreds of thousands: Nihang Sikh warriors on horses, gatka martial arts displays, three days of langar for everyone. The rest of the year it's quiet, dignified, and deeply worth an overnight. The Virasat-e-Khalsa museum, designed by Moshe Safdie, is a serious modern architecture piece and the best-designed museum in Punjab — allow three hours.
The town has a small strip of hotels and dharamshalas along the main Anandpur Sahib-Kiratpur road. Mid-range hotels $30-55; gurudwara-run dharamshalas $8-15 (very basic, but sincere and clean). During Hola Mohalla everything doubles or triples in price — book two months ahead or plan a day trip from Chandigarh (85km). Nangal, 15km away, has more hotel options at $35-60 and works as a base for both Anandpur and Bhakra Dam.
Start at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, walk to Anandgarh Fort, then to Gurudwara Sisganj Sahib where the ninth Guru's body was cremated, continue past the Virasat-e-Khalsa architecture, and end at Gurudwara Mata Jito Ji. Best done 6-9am when it's cool and the gurudwaras are active with morning kirtan.
All walking routesNo airport — Chandigarh IXC is 85km southeast (1.5 hours by taxi, $40-55). Anandpur Sahib has a small railway station on the Nangal branch line with passenger trains from Chandigarh (2.5 hours, $2). Most travelers arrive by road: PRTC buses from Chandigarh ISBT every hour ($3, 2.5 hours), or private taxi. Inside town, walking covers most sites; autos $1-2 for the outlying forts.
